The Library Board is celebrating Ontario Public Library Week with an Open House! The Board would love to take this opportunity to hear what you think – and to show off the library’s collections and services. Drop by on Oct. 26 to share your thoughts, check out what’s new, or just sample the refreshments. We look forward to seeing you.
“Quest for the Moon” (Mon, Oct. 7, 7:00 pm):
Amateur astronomer Frank Hitchens is offering a multimedia presentation entitled “Apollo 11: The Quest for the Moon” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. It tells the story of the people and events that made possible what may be history’s greatest achievement in science and engineering. Come and enjoy this fascinating (and free) evening.
MakerSpace 101 – For Adults & Teens:
Last month’s PaperCraft MakerSpace was a hit, and sparked ongoing MakerSpace sessions at the Library. This month Kirsten, Liz, Brenda & Kathy are going to offer…
Needlecraft (Thurs, Oct. 17, 7:00 pm):
Come for an introduction to sewing basics and insider tips – including handy stitching techniques, how to use a sewing machine, how to work with patterns, and some quilting basics (if time permits). This is a hands-on session: tools & supplies will be provided to create a simple project. Registration required (613-269-3326 / firstname.lastname@example.org). Contact the Library to find out more about our MakerSpace.
Off the Shelf! (Mon, Oct. 21, 7:00 pm):
This month promises some chills with Halloween-themed readings for adults. Join us for literary gems and light refreshments.
Friday Movies (starting Oct. 11, 2:00 pm):
Our Friday afternoon movies are returning for fall. Join us for award-winning and indie films from our Kanopy collection. Check our website to see what’s playing this month.
And for Kids:
Halloween Fun! (Sat, Oct 19, 10:30 am):
The Library will be putting the “BOO” into Books with a Saturday morning Halloween StoryTime (stories, rhythm instruments & lots of audience participation and a snack) at 10:30. Fun for toddlers to Gr. 2. Wear your costume and we’ll use the green screen to create a personalized Halloween photo – they’re a great (& free) keepsake.
Brenda Carter Memorial Art Workshop for Kids (Sat, Oct. 19, 1:00-3:00 pm):
Our Kids’ Art Group (age 8+) is starting up again – creating a series of “Artist Trading Cards”. Join local artist, Gloria Stowell, in experimenting with a variety of techniques and media to make these mini-masterpieces to collect and trade. Bring a friend! But be sure to contact the Library to register – spaces are limited.
StoryTime (Fridays, 10ish):
Calling all toddlers and preschoolers to our drop-in StoryTime for stories, songs, rhymes, rhythm instruments, and a simple craft. Promote early literacy, listening, and motor skills in a fun and relaxed setting – and spend time with other kids and parents. Our October themes are: Fall, Thanksgiving, and 2 weeks of Halloween fun. New StoryTimers are always welcome!
“The Secret Shortcut” by Mark Teague and our narrated walks continue on non-rainy Monday mornings at 10:00 & 10:30 until the middle of October. Something new will go up on the Story Trail (located on the Woodland-Toboggan Hill Trail starting by the Merrickville Public School parking lot) for the winter. Put on your hiking shoes and come see!
